IT industry in Sri Lanka has achieved a major breakthrough and is now one of the important industries of Sri Lanka. Since the industry requires a vast reservoir of technically skilled manpower, there is always a demand for qualified and trained candidates.
Those who follow information studies in North have a very limited access to the industry. Even though they have good academic background, having a sound industrial knowledge is much important to succeed in the IT industry. Unfortunately, due to lack of industries in this part of the country, the industry awareness level is also very poor among the students. Samuel Gnanam IT Centre (SGIC) has devoted itself to become the pioneer institution for Industrial Software Engineering Training in Jaffna, which helps and guide the IT graduates to reach heights in their IT career. SGIC operates as a charitable organization, funded by Mr. Rajaseelan Gnanam and Mr. Jeyaseelan Gnanam, in memory of their father Deshamanya A Y S Gnanam.
Due to the high demand in the IT industry to employ skilled Software Engineers, and the difficult in fulfilling this very high demand just from the fresh university graduates, the need for a bridging programme has become the need of the hour in the country. In assessing all these burning issues properly, the Board of Trustees of Samuel Gnanam IT Centre initiated a charitable model programme to address all these gaps and cultural myths. The Centre was named after Deshamanya A Y S Gnanam, hence the name “Samuel Gnanam IT Centre”. The Centre was ceremonially inaugurated in Jaffna on 9th of July 2018 by Mr. S R Gnanam and Mr. Jeyaseelan Gnanam, with the blessings of Rev.Fr. Samuel J Ponniah, Archdeacon, Diocese of Jaffna.
SGIC intakes fifty IT graduates from various universities and institutes every six months. The first batch intake was on July 2018. Trainees are trained by experienced trainers from leading Software companies. SGIC is equipped with all necessary infrastructure for the purpose including high end modern training labs, conference room, office spaces and lunch area. The training environment is very flexible on working time and the trainees spend most of their time at SGIC with group work, project work and even getting support from fellow trainees to fill their small gaps after a particular technology training. It is really nice to see in addition to the technologies, our trainees came out with great teamwork, very good attitude, high commitment and multitasking. SGIC is committed to improve the infrastructure further and also to keep customizing the training model in line with the rapidly changing technical stack and process.
